The original housing of this planned community, now operated as a cooperative, offers residents low-cost townhouse living in a financial arrangement that offers the best features of home ownership (building equity in your own home and yard) and of renting (heating, plumbing and structural maintenance performed by the cooperative). The City of Greenbelt is served by the Prince George's County Public School System. There are also a few private programs available in the area.

The City of Greenbelt is a suburb of Washington, D.C., located within Prince George’s County, one of the largest and fastest growing counties in the country. Greenbelt is the intersecting point for four major highways, including the Baltimore-Washington Parkway and the Capital Beltway. As such, easy access to much of the metropolitan area is available.
- The Greenbelt METRO station provides rapid rail transit to Washington and is part of the METRO RAIL system.
- A new station for the New York-to-Washington high-speed Metroliner is located only two miles from the city.
This area is served by three major airports, two which are located less than 30 minutes from Greenbelt.
Through a partnership between the City and the University of Maryland which began a year ago, Greenbelt residents can use the University of Maryland shuttle service (Shuttle UM). Information on routes and schedules is available on the University’s website, http://www.transportation.umd.edu/shuttle.html
Residents interested in using the shuttle must purchase an annual pass ($10) which is available at the Aquatic and Fitness Center, 101 Centerway and the Springhill Lake Recreation Center, 6101 Cherrywood Lane. Once you have the pass, there is no fare to use the Shuttle UM. Pass holders can ride any Shuttle UM route.

The application must be presented with proof of City Residency at the Greenbelt Aquatic & Fitness Center, 101 Centerway; the Greenbelt Youth Center, 99 Centerway, or the Springhill Lake Recreation Center at 6101 Cherrywood Lane. Applications received by mail will not be accepted.
Metrobus / Metrorail

Greenbelt has its own stop on the Green Line of the Metrorail System.With ample parking and a convenient location, the Greenbelt Metro station is your connection to Washington D.C. and the Metropolitan Area.
Hours of Operation
Metro is open at 5 a.m. on weekdays, 7 a.m. on weekends. Metro closes at midnight Sunday through Thursday and 3 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. When traveling at night, please check the last train departure times posted in the stations. Last trains leave many stations before midnight (between 2:30 and 3:30 a.m. on Friday and Saturday).
Major Highways
It's easy to get where you have to go from the City of Greenbelt. The city is located within the boundaries of the Capital Beltway (I495), providing access to the entire Washington Metropolitan Area. The Baltimore Washington Parkway (MD295) provides a strait route to DC and Baltimore. Greenbelt is also minutes away from Route 50 which leads to Annapolis, Maryland, the state capital.
TheBus
TheBus Transit Services operates 22 bus routes in Prince George's County. In keeping with their community service orientation, TheBus operates Monday through Friday, typically from 6 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. The base fare is $0.75 and the fare for seniors and persons with disabilities is $0.35. City of Greenbelt Trails
The City of Greenbelt prides itself on its extensive pathways for pedestrian and biker traffic. A hiker / biker trails map is available at the City Offices located at 25 Crescent Road, or by calling 301-474-8000 and requesting one by mail.
Greenbelt Connection Bus Service
A Dial-A-Ride service utilizing a 12-passenger, wheelchair accessible van. Service is available to all residents of Greenbelt. To arrange for transportation, call 301-474-4100 at least 24 hours before you need a ride.
The hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
For senior citizens, individuals with disabilities, and children (6-18years) the fare is $1 each way. For all other citizens the fare is $2 each way. The Greenbelt Connection does not operate on holidays observed by the city.
Prince George's County Call-A-Bus
The county's specialized curb-to-curb transportation service available to all residents who are not served by or cannot use existing bus or rail services. Priority for Call-A-Bus is given to senior citizens and disabled persons.
This service is provided within Prince George's County only. The regular fare is $1. The fare for seniors and persons with disabilities is $0.50. Call 301-499-8603 for further information.
Prince George's County Call-A-Cab
Call-A-Cab is the name for the county's transportation assistance program that provides mobility at a reduced cost for senior (age 55 and over) an/or disabled county residents. This program allows eligible residents to purchase coupon books that can be used to pay for rides with participating cab companies when Metrobus and/or Call-A-Bus are not available.
Senior and/or disabled residents may purchase up to 14 $20 coupon books in a six-month period at $10 per book. Call 301-883-5656 for further information.
